talk story
Light years ago in
memory ... on a continent far, far away from where I now live, there was a time when
friends, mere acquaintances and complete strangers would gather around a fire,
kitchen table,
barbeque, parking lot, lanai, lawn or beach ... and talk.
The Hawaiians had this down pat and
probably still do. They call it 'talk story.' And whether the story
was absolutely true, total bullshit or somewhere in between - like all good
stories, they were embellished and enhanced to suit the time, place and
audience, making them well worth listening to, remembering and hearing again.
The first place I saw
the online art of talk story was on Tom
McBride's website. Basically, it consisted of an exchange of
emails that were 'talk story' in cyberspace. Master surfer, Paul
Strauch also has a 'Talk Story' section on the Hawaiian
Surf Club website. Check them both out.
Those were special
times and I look forward to hanging out at a traditional talk story session once again. In the
meantime, here's the next best thing ... and I not only hope you enjoy what you
read, but also join in.
